The local organising committee of the IIHF World Championship event being held at Dumfries Ice Bowl in January is on the lookout for volunteers to fill essential roles.

The event takes place from 20th to 28th January 2023 with Great Britain Under-18 Women competing against Australia, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands and Turkey in the Division II Group A tournament.

There are a number of roles available including drivers, goal judges, statistics assistants, video camera operators, game operations assistants and other roles.

The local community and people from further afield are encouraged to make enquiries either direct at Dumfries Ice Bowl or through Struan Tonnar, Local Event Lead, at struan.tonnar@dumgal.gov.uk.

Training for some of the technical roles can be provided so if you have no experience, don’t let that put you off, we would still be keen to hear from you.

Chair of Communities Committee, Cllr Archie Dryburgh and Vice-Chair Cllr John Campbell, said: “The council really wants to celebrate the championships with the local community – and becoming a volunteer is a great way to be a part of a world-class sporting occasion.

“Ice hockey is a thrilling live sport to enjoy and we want to continue the excellent work that has been started at the previous championships at Dumfries Ice Bowl.”

Brian McMeeken has volunteered at previous events and has already said he would be available to help out again.

“It’s great to be part of a world-class event in my local town as it’s something that doesn’t come around very often,” he said.

“The thing I like best is the atmosphere that is created and we get well looked after by the organising team in Dumfries. I would encourage anyone to give it a go.”
