The local organising committee of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship event being held at Dumfries Ice Bowl in December is on the lookout for volunteers to fill essential roles.

The event takes place from 11th to 17th December 2023 when Great Britain will face China, Korea, Lithuania Netherlands and Spain.

There are a number of roles available including drivers, goal judges, statistics assistants, video camera operators, game operations assistants and other roles.

The local community and people from further afield are encouraged to make enquiries either direct at Dumfries Ice Bowl or through Kennedy Kirk, Volunteer Lead for the event, at kennedy.kirk@dumgal.gov.uk.

Training for some of the technical roles can be provided so if you have no experience, don’t let that put you off. We would still be keen to hear from you.

Ice Hockey UK CEO, Henry Staelens, said: “We truly appreciate the time and effort that volunteers give – they are often the beating heart of events like this.

“We know from feedback that volunteers typically love the inclusive and friendly environment, as well as watching some world-class hockey on the ice. I hope to see lots of volunteers, whether new or experienced, join us in December.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council Chair of Communities Committee, Cllr Ian Blake, said: “Hosting international events such as this is a credit to the facility and the region. Our experience of hosting as a council is growing from strength to strength.

“Being able to recruit volunteers into the events is a testament to the character of our communities and we are excited to have the eyes of the hockey world on our ice rink.”

Vice Chair, Cllr Jackie McCamon, said: “The council enjoys a warm and productive partnership with IHUK, which has been strengthened due to the successful delivery of past events.

“These events are not possible without the wealth of experience our volunteer network has and we are excited to develop and expand this area of event delivery in the region.”

Brian McMeeken, who has volunteered at previous events and has already said he would be available to help out again, said: “It’s great to be part of a world class event in my local town as it’s something that doesn’t come around very often.

“The thing I like best is the atmosphere that is created and we get well looked after by the organising team in Dumfries. I would encourage anyone to give it a go.”
