Forward Colin Shields says Great Britain’s victory over France to ensure their top-flight World Championship survival was the “best seventh-placed finish you could ever ask for”.

GB came from 3-0 down to tie the game at 3-3 before Ben Davies scored in overtime to secure a 4-3 victory and book their place at the World Championship in Switzerland next year.

Shields, who played his final game before retirement, said: “What a game from start to finish. I thought everyone battled throughout the night and it was very mixed emotions throughout the game.

“They scored three fast goals but we knew if we got one back we would have a chance.

“To come back with a finish like that is amazing and I am really proud of the boys – and I am looking forward to watching them in the World Championship next year.”

GB came from 2-0 down to secure the point they needed in Hungary a year ago to win promotion, but this time they roared back with goals from Robert Dowd, Mike Hammond and Robert Farmer, before Davies’ dramatic overtime winner.

“We have been through so much as a group, so many ups and downs. It’s just that never quit attitude,” added Shields.

“It’s the best seventh-placed finish you could ever ask for. I have shared some special moments with the boys over the years.

“It was great to finish with the win and I so happy for everyone.”
