The IIHF Council have met this week to discuss recent developments including tournament cancellations because of covid-19, as well as the preparation for the upcoming 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

The IIHF Council was also informed about current team withdrawals and the situation concerning event cancellations in January.

The rapidly-spreading omicron variant saw all IIHF tournaments originally planned in January cancelled several weeks in advance, which meant GB Under-18 Women’s trip to the World Championship Division II tournament in Turkey was called off.

The IIHF has been in contact with organisers, participating teams and their national associations to potentially play the recently cancelled events later this year.

They are working with the current host nations or, if necessary, potential other host countries as well as the teams to find dates for these events.

IIHF President, Luc Tardif, said: “Although there is still work to be done to secure hosts and dates, the majority of participating teams and organisers have expressed interest and willingness to participate in rescheduled events during the summer of 2022.

“Further meetings will be held this month to determine next steps for each of the cancelled tournaments.”
