Great Britain Universities Men produced a fantastic performance in a battling 7-3 defeat by Switzerland at the World University Games in Krasnoyarsk.

After going 5-0 down just past the 25-minute mark, GB rallied in the second period with powerplay goals from Andreas Siagris (26:04) and Christian Johnson (33:00).

Switzerland went to the second intermission with a 6-2 lead but Joshua Cook made it a two-goal game with a powerplay goal at 51:24.

The Swiss scored their seventh with 37 seconds remaining.

Coach, Matt Bradbury, said: “The slow start cost and we missed a couple of chances early on in the game and this hurt us.

“It’s always going to be tough to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the first period, but full credit to the team who dug deep and did the best they could.

“We took our goals well and it felt good to get some markers on the board. We are improving all the time and remain positive with some big games ahead.

“The competition is an amazing world-class multi-sport experience for all players involved representing Team GBR.

“Tuesday is a day off which will enable us to regroup and plan ahead for a tough game against Kazakhstan.”
