Great Britain will go for gold and promotion after a 2-1 overtime victory over the Netherlands in the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship Division II in Istanbul.

Ellin Rees scored the winner in the extra period after netminder Emma Nichols had saved a Netherlands penalty shot with just over a minute remaining in normal time.

GB finish second in Group D and will now face group winners Spain in the gold-medal game on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first session, Netherlands took the lead on a five-on-three powerplay in period two.

A shot from Fleur Kivitis from the slot was deflected past Emma Nichols off Nina Visser’s skate (34:03).

GB hit back only 93 seconds later as Rees played the puck off the left boards and it found Ellie Patrick, who broke away to fire top shelf (35:36).

Nichols made a huge save from Kimberly Collard’s penalty shot with only 63 seconds remaining.

GB won it 46 seconds into the extra period as Elouise Porter’s shot was saved and Rees poked home the rebound following a goalmouth scramble (60:46).
