Great Britain Under-18 Women’s second game at the Four Nations Women’s U18 International Tournament in Granada ended in defeat as they were beaten 5-0 by Poland U18 Women.

Poland netminder Helena Grzybowska secured a shutout while GB goalie Maisie Gilbert saved 29 of the 34 shots she faced.

The game served as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming World Championship with the two sides meeting in January in Division 1 Group B in Katowice.

Poland took the lead at 3:56 when Katarzyna Wybiral finished neatly on the breakaway.

GB killed off a penalty to Emily Johnson but Poland got their second moments later when Wiktoria Gogoc pounced to a rebound on the doorstep (12:26) for a 2-0 first-period lead.

Poland scored their third with a second remaining on the powerplay as Klaudia  Kaleja cut in from the right to fire low past Gilbert at 23:19.

Britain hit penalty trouble in the second period and did well to kill off 40 seconds of a five-on-three, before going close through Charlotte Harris.

Anna Sopata finished off a well-worked move early in session three (41:07), while Natalia Wrona reacted first to loose puck for Poland’s fifth goal at 48:41.

Abbie Sylvester was named as GB’s player of the game.

Assistant coach, James Ashton, said: “Taking penalties didn’t help us again but the coaching staff were pleased with how hard the girls worked.

“We lost 11-0 to Poland in this tournament last year so, just like against Hungary yesterday, we are seeing an improvement.

“This wasn’t such a good performance compared to yesterday, but we must not lose sight of the fact that this is a very young squad.

“The experience these young players are getting this weekend will be so beneficial when it comes to the World Championship in January.

“We have played every player every game so far and from that players are gaining experience. We need to combine talent and experience to win future games.”
