Ice Hockey Olympic and World Championship Groups confirmed Following their recent fourth place finish in the recent World Championships in Austria, GB will play in Division 1, Group B of the 2009 World Championships. The other Division One group will take place in Lithuania and will feature Kazakhstan, Japan, relegated Slovenia, Croatia and promoted Australia. The Great Britain women’s team will also enter the Olympic qualifying process in a pre qualifying tournament, scheduled for 4th to 7th September. The event will be hosted by Slovenia (16th) and will see GB (23rd) also take on Austria (19th) and Norway (14th). The winners of the group will progress to a final qualifying tournament in November. The women will travel to Italy for their World Championship group in April where they will face the hosts (15th), Latvia (13th), Denmark (18th), Korea (20th) and Holland (21st). Ice Hockey UK Chairman, Bob Wilkinson is looking forward to next season’s international exchanges. “It’s going to be a very exciting international season. It’s been eight years since we took part in Olympic qualifying so we’re really looking forward to being part of it again. Both the men and the women are in very tough groups but the Olympics are something very special and everyone will be very motivated to try to get through to the next round. “The women had a fantastic World Championships in 2008, bringing home a gold medal and winning promotion to a higher division so it will good for them to see how far they have progressed as a team against much higher rated opposition. The men also did really well out in Austria and I know they will be going all out to try to win a medal this time around.” [ More... ] |

Brave GB go Down to Kazakhstan GB weathered the storm in the first period as Kazakhstan came out of the blocks hard, with GB taking early penalties as Kazakhstan pushed forward Stephen Murphy saw plenty of the puck. Edinburgh Capitals defenseman Kyle Horne received a nasty elbow from Kazakhstan forward Starchenko in the 4th minute, this gave GB a period of time to settle down and take some control themselves. Home bmibaby EIHL News Brave GB Go Down in Kazakhstan Victory! Brave GB Go Down in Kazakhstan Victory! News posted: 19-04-2008 It took until 54.42 for Kazakhstan to take the lead against Team GB, a team ranked 11 places below them in World Standings, up until then the British had stood firm led by goalie Stephen Murphy. The result see's Kazakhstan become favourites to take the Silver Medal with Britain finishing in 4th place. GB weathered the storm in the first period as Kazakhstan came out of the blocks hard, with GB taking early penalties as Kazakhstan pushed forward Stephen Murphy saw plenty of the puck. Edinburgh Capitals defenseman Kyle Horne received a nasty elbow from Kazakhstan forward Starchenko in the 4th minute, this gave GB a period of time to settle down and take some control themselves. Influential Greg Chambers did great work behind the net before laying on an inch perfect pass for David Clarke to jam home to give the British a surprise 1-0 lead. Kazakhstan threw everything at GB and with their speed telling the British took 3 more minor penalties in the first period, with the penalty kill units led by Panthers Mathew Myers and Steelers Jonathan Phillips working over time to ensure that they protected the goal advantage. Pressure eventually told when in the 13th minute Murphy deflected a shot into the path of Spiridonov who at the 2nd attempt fired over a sprawling Murphy. GB Coach Paul Thompson called for GB to be tighter in the 2nd period and play a more defensive game, this they did as they suffocated much of the Kazakhstan offence whilst creating two good scoring chances of their own falling to Leigh Jamieson and Greg Owen. After a scoreless middle period it was all to play for in the final 20 minutes with the team winning that period collecting a silver medal at the Championship. The British youngsters out battled Kazakhstan for great periods of the 3rd period with excellent chances falling to the line of Greg Owen, Jonathan Phillips and Greg Chamber. Owen in fact hit the post when he beat Kazakhstan defenseman Fadeyev to a rebounded shot from Phillips. With over time starting to look likely and GB closer to pulling off an amazing result Kazakhstan came hard throwing every thing at the British with Murphy making outstanding save after another. With just over 5 minutes remaining Yessirkenov through a wrist shot at Murphy's net only for it to be deflected off the pads of forward Spiridonov for the game winning goal. Kazakhstan then broke British hearts when Vyatkin deflected a shot past Murphy 32 seconds later to rap up the victory. Murphy turned away an incredible 45 shots against the talented Kazakhstan team to earn him self the man of the match award. [ More... ] |
