A three-day Great Britain camp in Sheffield began today with on and off-ice sessions for the under-18 and under-16 women.
The teams had two on-ice practices each at Ice Sheffield and also off-ice fitness activities, including strength and conditioning.
GB captain Saffron Allen, who is part of the under-16 women’s coaching staff, gave a talk to the youngsters.
Allen, who has made 45 appearances for Great Britain Women, discussed her experiences of being a hockey player.
“It was a great environment and the girls worked hard and gave it their all on the ice and during the off-ice sessions,” said under-18s women’s head coach, James Ashton.
“In these difficult times, the staff are really pleased with all the players and we are looking forward to continuing the programme.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the Ice Sheffield staff, Ice Hockey UK, as well as all the GB staff and players.”
Under-16s women’s head coach, Nicci Wardell, added: “The camp went very well today.
“The girls exceeded our expectations of them – bearing in mind that so many have had limited ice-time since March 2020.
“Their energy and compete level was high and they are definitely going to give the coaches some challenging decisions in choosing a team going forward.”
The camp continues tomorrow and Saturday with the men’s under-20s, under-18s and under-16s taking to the ice.
