Volunteers needed at the Under-20 World Championship in Dumfries

The local organising committee of the IIHF World Championship event being held at Dumfries Ice Bowl in December is on the lookout for volunteers to fill essential roles during the championships.

The event takes place from 10th to 16th December 2017 as Great Britain come up against Japan, Romania, Estonia, Netherlands and Korea

There are a number of roles available including drivers, goal judges, statistics assistants, video camera operators, game operations assistants and other roles.

The local community and people from further afield are encouraged to make enquiries either direct at Dumfries Ice Bowl or through Struan Tonnar, local event lead at Struan.tonnar@dumgal.gov.uk.

Training for some of the technical roles can be provided so if you have no experience, don’t let that put you off, we would still be keen to hear from you.

Councillor Jeff Leaver, chairman of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning Committee, said: “The council really wants to celebrate the championships with the local community and becoming a volunteer is a great way to be a part of a world-class sporting occasion.”

Vice-chair, Ros Surtees, added: “Ice Hockey is a thrilling live sport to enjoy and we want to continue the excellent work that has been started at the previous championships at Dumfries Ice Bowl.”

Brian McMeeken has volunteered at previous events and already said he would be available to help out again.

“It’s great to be part of a world class event in my local town as it’s something that doesn’t come around very often,” he said.

“The thing I like best is the atmosphere that is created and we get well looked after by the organising team in Dumfries. I would encourage anyone to give it a go.”
