Manchester Storm defenceman David Phillips says two training sessions a day is really helping Great Britain prepare for the World Championship in Zagreb.

GB begin the Division 1B tournament with a game against hosts Croatia on Sunday evening.

They then face Estonia, Lithuania and Romania before a final-day game against Ukraine, who suffered relegation from Division 1A last season.

Britain had a week-long training camp in Coventry and were on the ice twice each day.

After arriving in Zagreb yesterday, there are two more on-ice practices for GB today (Friday) and another on Saturday.

“Being on twice every day is tough but in the two sessions we get to work on what we need to do,” said Phillips.

“We get to work on our special teams, our powerplay and the penalty kill.

“We have taken huge strides in the last week and you can just see with the practices since arriving here.

“We have come a long way since day one last week.”

Phillips says that despite the gruelling schedule, there are a lot of smiles on the ice.

“The good thing about this side is that it has great team spirit,” continued Phillips.

“There is great competition but there is also good camaraderie.

“Every time we are on the ice, we enjoy ourselves but we are also working hard.

“We are going fast-paced, high-tempo and with a smile on our faces – and that is exactly what you want.”
