Over 200 players will be part of a three-day Great Britain junior camp in Sheffield later this week.

The camp will get under way with the under-18 and under-16 women taking to the ice on Thursday in Ice Sheffield.

This will be followed by a men’s camp for the under-20s, under-18s and under-16s on Friday and Saturday.

GB forward Liam Kirk, who finished as joint-leading goalscorer at this year’s World Championship, will attend to give a talk to the youngsters.

National Development Head Coach, Tony Hand, said: “It’s fantastic to get so many players back on the ice as we prepare for next year’s World Championship tournaments at all age groups.

“There’s a big season ahead for our junior teams, some of whom haven’t played an international game for two years.

“It’s vital to get the youngsters back on the ice and this will be hugely beneficial for the players and obviously the coaching staff as well.

“We will continue to look at players throughout the year, so the door is always open if players are excelling in the domestic game.”

Kirk scored seven goals in seven matches as GB finished seventh in Group A in Riga, helping them move up to 16th in the IIHF world rankings.

The 21-year-old came through the GB junior programme and has won medals at all levels, starting with a gold with GB Under-18s in 2018.

He won bronze with GB U20s in the same season and added a gold medal with the men’s team in Budapest, as part of the historic promotion-winning team to the elite level.

In 2019, he won another bronze with the under-20s as he led the team in goals, assists and points for a second successive season, while also being part of the GB team that avoided relegation from the World Championship top flight with a come-from-behind 4-3 overtime victory over France in their final game.

“Liam is an absolute model professional,” added Hand. “He’s the perfect example of what can be achieved as a youngster playing the sport in this country.

“He’s one of the best players we have produced and the dedication and professional of Liam – on and off the ice – is an example others should follow.

“It will be fantastic for the youngsters to hear from Liam and I’d like to thank him for giving up his time to attend.”

The camps form part of preparations for the various 2022 World Championship tournaments, which were announced last week.

GB U20s will go to Romania and GB U18s are off to Estonia, while an international tournament is planned for GB U16s.

Great Britain Under-18 Women will play their World Championship tournament in January next year, with the format and venue still to be confirmed.
