The UK’s representative in this season’s Continental Cup, Sheffield Steelers, have just missed out on a place in January’s final round.

Steelers beat hosts Aalborg (3-1) and Riga (3-2), but a final-day 4-0 defeat by HK Gomel saw them miss out on goal difference.

Sheffield head coach, Aaron Fox, told BBC Radio Sheffield’s Peter Spencer: “We had some chances but it just didn’t go in.

“We tried to grind through with all our injuries. We had four of our best forwards sitting in the stands.

“It was disappointing but I am proud of what we have done this weekend. We showed a huge character effort.

“We put some players into situations that they are not normally in. It was just a battle.

“The effort and compete level was there but we didn’t score a ton of goals. We knew it was going to be a tough weekend with the numbers we had, but we can be proud of what we did.”
