Great Britain Women came from behind to beat Spain Women 4-1 to set up a chance of a gold medal at the World Championship Division II Group A in Dumfries.
Aimee Headland, Saffron Allen and Katie Marsden scored their second goals of the tournament, while Jodie Bloom picked up a goal and two assists and Nicole Jackson turned away 18 of the 19 shots she faced.
The medals will be decided on tomorrow’s final day and GB can win gold but is out of their hands. Britain need to beat DPR Korea and hope that Slovenia drop points in their game with Mexico.
Spain Women ahead on the powerplay
Despite GB having the better of the opening stages, it was Spain who took the lead at 5:02 as Paula Moreno converted with a neat tip on the powerplay.
Chloe Headland saw her shot saved from the left circle, while Allen was denied by a fantastic point-blank save by Alba Gonzalo.
Spain finished the period strong as Leticia Abrisqueta hit the post, while Jackson had to be at her best to turn away two shots from close range.
Aimee Headland grabs second goal of tournament
Kim Lane shot just wide as GB piled on the pressure in the second period and it was no surprise when they levelled the game up.
Aimee Headland fired high from the slot for her second goal of the tournament at 29:04, with Lane getting the assist.
Three-goal third period wins it for GB
GB went ahead when Bloom’s clever pass found Allen who initially failed to control the puck, but drove the net to get the final touch (43:57).
Player of the game Step Towns hit the bar as GB went in hunt of a third and it came on the powerplay inside the final five minutes.
Georgina Farman and Bloom combined to set up Marsden who fired a beautiful wrist shot top shelf from the slot (55:42).
Bloom wrapped the game up when she chased down a loose puck and scored on the backhand into an empty net at 59:18.
Smith: Most impressive performance of the tournament
Smith said: “This was our best performance of the tournament and we were excellent from start to finish.
“The coaching staff were impressed with how we didn’t panic when things weren’t going our way early on.
“We used a lot of set-plays throughout the game and it was great to see them deliver what we asked of them.
“I just want to mention the officiating. That was a tough game to referee and it was first class.
“If our girls play like that tomorrow then who knows. We need a favour from Mexico but this tournament has been wide open all week, so there could just be another twist.”
The medals will be decided tomorrow as Slovenia face Mexico at 1:30pm and Australia play Spain at 4:30pm.
