Slovenia Women clinched the gold medal and promotion to Division I (Group B) for the first time in their history as they beat Mexico Women 7-1 in the World Championship Division II Group A in Dumfries.

They didn’t have it all their own way all tournament though and had to regroup after an opening-day penalty-shot defeat by Spain Women.

Slovenia beat GB Women 4-2 in their second game and then demolished Australia 6-1, which was followed by a penalty-shot victory over DPR Korea.

Needing two points to guarantee the gold, Slovenia blew Mexico away despite going a goal behind.

Pia Pren (6+14) for 20 points, Sara Confidenti (7+7) for 14 points and 15-year-old Julija Blazinsek (7+6) for 13 points will finish as the three leading points-scorers in the competition.

Slovenia debuted in the World Championship back in 2000 and in 2015 they were promoted to Division II Group A.

After three successive fifth-placed finishes, Slovenia will next year be playing in Division I.
