Sheffield Steelers forward Jonathan Phillips says the two international games against Denmark are “excellent preparation” for Great Britain ahead of this year’s World Championship in Finland.

GB meet Denmark at the Skydome in Coventry on Saturday 7th May (7pm) and the two sides also head-to-head the following day at Nottingham’s National Ice Centre, Sunday 8th May (4pm).

“Every year, it seems the standard of opposition we face goes up a level and Denmark will be one of the best sides to ever come to the UK,” said Phillips.

“With the late end to the Elite League season we have a shorter camp than the past few years, so getting these games in against a quality opposition is important.

“It will be excellent preparation for the World Championship and we are looking forward to testing ourselves against Denmark.”

The top-flight tournament in Helsinki and Tampere runs from 13th to 29th May, with GB in Group B based at the newly-built 13,500-seater Tampere Deck Arena.

They’ll come up against Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Sweden and the USA in the group stages.

“We’ve been on a remarkable journey for the past few years and we don’t want that to end anytime soon,” continued Phillips.

“Last year’s tournament was unique because there was no relegation, but we know how to handle the pressure situations.

“We showed what we could do when the pressure was on against France in 2019 with the overtime victory after going 3-0 down.

“Every year we want to go one better and we did that last year with four points and the regulation-time victory over Belarus.

“We know we can compete at this level and we want to show the ice hockey world again this year just how good we can be.”
