Ice Hockey UK chairman Rich Grieveson has stated that one new national governing body for ice hockey in the UK is more important than ever.

The EIHA confirmed last week that their members will vote again on a unified approach and this vote is expected to take place before the end of the year.

Grieveson said: “When I took up the role of chairman 2016, I tabled a number of objectives for change – and changing the current structure and overall governance arrangements for our sport was the single most important thing.

“It has been a great few years for GB ice hockey. We’ve hosted numerous World Championship tournaments, including the memorable men’s Division I Group B in Belfast.

“GB becoming a top-flight nation, led by Pete Russell and his incredible team, was the most exciting moment on the ice in a generation but off the ice, a new single governing body is so important for the future of the sport.

“As I have said before, this is not about Ice Hockey UK or any one association taking control – it never has been about that. It is creating a new organisation with a new board having the ability to drive change, improvements and further development.”

The EIHA came out publicly in support of the amalgamation last week and said in a statement: “The board agree that change is needed, that’s why we had the EGM and why another vote on the detailed proposals the membership requested will be put forward shortly.

“This will include an updated structure reflecting the comments received by stakeholders, a full strategy and financial plan for the new organisation, a clear succession plan for building a new appropriately skilled board over the next 12 months and a set of FAQs that will address many of the questions raised through the consultations held earlier this year.”
