Great Britain set up a gold-medal match against Ukraine tomorrow with a 6-1 victory over Romania in the World Championship (Division 1B) in Zagreb.

With unbeaten Ukraine facing Lithuania later this afternoon, the exact permutations for GB are not yet know, but a win tomorrow would guarantee Pete Russell’s side promotion to Division 1A and the gold medal.

GB controlled the game and outshot Romania 58-11 including 23 shots in the second period.

Jonathan Phillips, as he did against Lithuania on Wednesday, scored GB’s first goal as netminder Otto Onodi spilled his shot from the slot (3:15).

Phillips then turned provider as his pass from left side found Jonathan Boxill in front for his second goal of the tournament at 10:52.

Robert Farmer skated into the offensive zone and fired top shelf past Onodi from the left circle on the powerplay (23:00).

Head coach, Pete Russell, said: “We did well out there. It wasn’t pretty but we did what we had to do.

“They are such a focused bunch of guys and nothing seems to put them off their stride.

“This was a game we were expected to win and they went out and did that.

“It sets up a massive gold-medal match tomorrow and it is a game we have been building towards all week.

“It’s exciting and we will now focus our attentions on Ukraine.”

GB’s final game against Ukraine tomorrow faces-off at 1pm in the Dom Sportova Arena (12noon UK time).
