GB Women’s Universities beaten by 2013 gold-medal winners

Great Britain Women’s Universities side went down 14-0 to Canada in their second match at the 28th Winter Universiade in Almaty

Canada, who won gold four years ago in Italy, took the game with period scores of 8-0, 5-0, 1-0 as they put a mammoth 77 shots on GB netminders Samantha Bolwell and Holly Steeples, who shared half a game each.

Coach, James Ashton, said: “It was a great honour, not only to coach the team but, more importantly, being present to witness this team compete and battle – and have a never-say-die attitude.

“We have worked hard after the Kazakhstan game and, for me, the girls did everything we had worked on.

“Our netminders played outstanding and this was commented on by the Canada coach Rachel Flanagan.

“Our little hockey nation competed against the biggest in the world and we did ourselves proud.

“We need to carry this through to the rest of the games, continue to learn and enjoy the experience.”

GB’s next match is on Wednesday when they take on China (10:30am UK time).
