Great Britain Women scored two goals in the last 81 seconds to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico Women in their opening game at the Olympic Preliminary Qualifying Round 2 in Astana.

Saffron Allen’s equaliser was followed 21 seconds later by Angela Taylor’s winner as GB scored three third-period goals to win the game.

Joanna Rojas netted on the doorstep after 61 seconds (1’01) and Francia Hernandez’s powerplay goal via a deflection made it 2-0 at 19:02.

Kimberley Lane pulled a goal back following a goalmouth scramble (52:38) to reduce the deficit to one.

Allen stepped out of the left corner to fire in the equaliser (58:39) before Taylor scored with a one-timer through the five-hole to secure a stunning victory (59:00)

Assistant coach, James Ashton, said: “These games are always hard and we had a high expectation.

“Training has been good but we made a slow start to the game and made a couple of small mistakes to allow Mexico two goals.

“We had a sharp discussion at the end of the first period, but what was good to see was that the experienced players delivered and the young players didn’t let their heads drop.

“What we had to do was stay patient as we knew the chances would come.

“Fair play to Mexico, I thought they played excellent and they put in a great performance.”

GB return to action tomorrow for their second game of the tournament, when they face Poland at 3pm (9am UK time).
