Great Britain defenceman Mark Garside says getting the early goal was important in their 6-1 victory over Romania in the World Championship (Division 1B) in Zagreb.

GB’s victory means they can win the gold medal tomorrow if they beat Ukraine – who were relegated from Division 1A last season – at the Dom Sportova Arena.

“The first goal was important for us against Romania,” said Garside. “We did that against Lithuania as well.

“We have got ourselves a couple of goals up in the last two games and made it easier for ourselves.”

Attention now turns to tomorrow’s game against Ukraine and Garside says GB do not need to complicate things.

“I think we just need to play simple hockey,” he continued.

“Ukraine are better opposition than most of the teams here.

“A gold medal would be amazing for me and team.

“We have fought so hard over the last week or so, starting from the training camp.

“It would mean the world to all of us.”

Great Britain against Ukraine gets under way at 1pm tomorrow in Zagreb (12noon UK time).
