Ice Hockey UK’s Great Britain Programme Board have confirmed the first Great Britain training camp of the season, which will take place in Sheffield next week.

The three-day camp, which is being held in Ice Sheffield from Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st July, will be a first chance for the GB junior coaches to take a look at potential players for the season ahead.

A GB Under-20s camp will be held on Wednesday, with the U18s camp taking place on Thursday and the U16s camp on Friday.

IHUK national development head coach, Tony Hand, said: “Bringing all the three camps together in the space of three days makes a lot of sense.

“The joined-up thinking means there will be much more continuity in the GB programme.

“We have an exciting line-up of coaches now with the new staff joining some very experienced GB junior coaches.”

Slava Koulikov, head coach of Great Britain Under-20s, said: “There will be close to 40 players attending first under-20 camp of the year.

“There will be some guys we know from last year and also new exciting young prospects from all over the country.

“Myself, Martin and Aaron have been preparing well and we are looking forward to getting to know the guys, evaluating and working with them.”

GB Under-18s head coach, Jeff Hutchins, said: “I am looking forward to meeting up with the staff, getting our gameplan in place for the first look at this year’s hopefuls.

“I am approaching this camp with an open mind, so this really is an opportunity for the players to impress. My coaching staff and I are keen to understand who wants to represent their country from day one.

“Nobody is guaranteed a spot, those that come in and compete will set themselves up with the best chance of representing GB.”

Steven Lynch, head coach of Great Britain Under-16s, said: “I’ve had a chat with the other under-16 coaches and we are all in agreement that we are going to use our camp to get to know the players and get an idea of their individual and collective skill-set.

“We are going to have two contrasting on-ice sessions; one where we look at them in practise drills where we can assess their technical skills and the other where we will see them in a game situation to get an idea of their tactical knowledge and application.

“What we hope to achieve is that at the end of the camp we have a clear picture of what we have to work with over the coming season, what we need to work on to improve, what we need to teach and that the players have an understanding of what is expected of them and the standards they have to set themselves to be a part of a national team.”
