Forward Robert Dowd says Great Britain showed amazing character to beat Slovenia 3-1 in their opening game at the World Championship Division 1 Group A in Budapest.

GB stunned the top seeds Slovenia who are ranked 15th in the world and played in this year’s Winter Olympics in Korea.

“It was an amazing performance,” said the Sheffield Steelers forward. “I lost count of the number of shots blocked by the guys.

“We showed fantastic spirit and character and it was a performance to be proud of.

“We put everything on the line and produced one of the most special performances I can remember.

“Slovenia are a great hockey nation but we came out fired up and took it to them from the first face-off.

“We grew in confidence as the game went on and I think that showed on the ice.”

GB do not play tomorrow but return to action on Tuesday when they face Kazakhstan at 4pm (3pm UK time).

“This has been a great start to the tournament but we have four more to go,” continued Dowd.

“We can take a lot from this game into the rest of the tournament.”
