Ice Hockey UK would like to congratulate outgoing IIHF president René Fasel on a fantastic tenure at the head of the sport’s governing body.

Mr Fasel held the position for 27 years and is standing down this year – and elections are taking place at the IIHF’s Semi-Annual Congress in Russia this week for his replacement.

A number of tributes have been paid to him over the past few days, including the hosting of special game in his honour at Yubileiny Sports Complex – one of the host arenas of the World Championship tournaments in 2000 and 2016.

“I’m getting older,” Fasel, 71, said after officiating the entire game. “But it was great to be on the ice with these players, some of them were idols when I was young.

“The spirit of being with these players and referees and how they treated me is heartwarming.”
