Cardiff Devils’ first road game in this season’s CHL ended in a frustrating 5-2 loss to Mountfield on Thursday night.

The hosts opened the scoring with a powerplay goal from Tomáš Vincour at 9:41 of the opening period. At 13:14 they doubled their lead with a goal from Lukáš Cingel to make it 2-0, which is how the period ended.

The middle 20 minutes were scoreless but Mountfield took a high-sticking penalty in the dying seconds to give the Devils a powerplay opportunity to open the third period.

The home side killed off the initially penalty but were straight back in the box after being called for delay of game, giving the Devils another 2 minutes on the powerplay to try and pull one back.

But instead it was Mountfield who extended their lead with a short-handed breakaway goal by Daniel Rákos making it 3-0 at 42:24. Another powerplay goal at 46:27 from Rudolf Červený put the hosts up 4-0 before the Devils finally started to claw back into the game.

At 52:37 Bryce Reddick scored to make it 4-1, then 30 seconds later, Matias Sointu chose to shoot on a 2 on 1 and found the back of the net to make it 4-2 with 7 minutes left to play.

The Devils opted to pull netminder Ben Bowns in favour of the extra attacker, but the move didn’t pay off and it was Māris Bičevskis who scored into the empty net to round off the scoring at 5-2.
