Ice Hockey UK have appointed Gary Brine as the head of the GB goaltending development programme.

The 54-year-old is no stranger to the national side after icing for Great Britain during his playing career, as well as GB U20s and GB U18s.

Domestically, he spent time with Streatham Redskins, Slough Jets, Medway Bears and Bracknell Bees.

Brine will work closely with head coaches across the UK to enhance the development of the young netminders to reach their full potential.

IHUK’s national development head coach, Tony Hand, said: “We are delighted to welcome Gary on-board to the development programme.

“Gary gave an outstanding interview and the panel were very impressed by his ideas to move the programme to the next level and to develop the skills of our young netminders.

“He has extensive experience as a netminder and his skills will be a massive asset for us moving forward.”

Brine said: “I am delighted to have been selected to head-up a programme that will change the way we identify, select, coach and nurture Great Britain goalies, so that they become an asset to our national programme and the professional and semi-professional leagues in the UK.

“Our aim will be to look at as many goalies as possible and to identify talent early on to nurture and help them grow into the position, both mentally and physically.

“I have experience at international level myself. I know what it takes to become a GB goalie and I have first-hand experience of nurturing young talent having coached three of the current under-18 netminders from an early age.”
