HAND: DOOR IS STILL OPEN TO ALL GB JUNIOR PLAYERS

Ice Hockey UK’s National Development Head Coach Tony Hand MBE says the door is still open to players even if they are not selected for the upcoming Great Britain junior camps.

GB’s youngsters will make a welcome return to the ice with a three-day camp at Ice Sheffield for all age groups in June.

The under-18 and under-16 women camps will take place on 17th June, while the under-20, under-18 and under-16 men’s squads will take to the ice on 18th and 19th June,

There will also be a two-day camp in Dundee on 23rd and 24th July.

Hand said: “It has been a very strange 12 months with the lockdowns and the temporary suspension of junior ice hockey.

“Around 40 players in each age group will attend trials later in the year. With covid restrictions, we have to limit the numbers in the camp for health and safety reasons. Normally, we would invite many more players.

“But this doesn’t mean the door is closed for other youngsters. It is very important to stress that point. Our coaches will continue to monitor all players up until the selection for the World Championship tournaments.

“Any player not in the initial camps can certainly still be involved going forward and it is not closed shop.

“So many players will have had so little ice-time in the past year, so everyone will be at different stages of their development.

“A lot of work is going on behind the scenes for the upcoming camps and it will be great to see the youngsters back on the ice after so long away from the game they love.”
