GB v HUNGARY: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Great Britain and Hungary go head-to-head in Milton Keynes this afternoon (2pm) in the final game of a three-match series between the two sides and Italy.

Italy beat GB 5-2 on Friday night at the Skydome in Coventry before Hungary were 6-1 winners over Italy last night at the same venue.

This afternoon’s game is the first meeting between GB and Hungary since one of the biggest moments in UK ice hockey history in the World Championship Division I Group A in Budapest last April.

Trailing 2-0 to goals from Christopher Bodo and Csanad Erdely, Robert Dowd closed the gap and Ben Bowns saved Janos Hari’s penalty shot.

It all set up the dramatic finish as Robert Farmer scored with 15 seconds remaining to give GB the point they need to secure promotion to the top flight of World Championship ice hockey.

GB went on to win the game 3-2 on penalty shots and go up as gold-medal winners, with Italy securing promotion with silver, while Hungary were left to wonder what might have been.

Britain and Hungary have met 30 times before with Hungary having 17 wins to GB’s 12 and there has been one tie. They first played each other at the Olympic Games in St Moritz in 1928, with GB sneaking a 1-0 win.
