AUSTRIA U18S 3-2 GREAT BRITAIN U18S (OVERTIME)

Great Britain Under-18s picked up a priceless point with a 3-2 overtime defeat by Austria Under-18s in the U18 World Championship Division I Group B in Hungary.

Captain Mason Alderson scored twice, including an equaliser with 84 seconds remaining, as GB stayed in the hunt for a medal.

Alderson put GB ahead in the first period as broke down the middle, skated away from a challenge and finished with a neat backhand (10:48).

There were no goals in session two but GB netminder Will Kerlin produced a fantastic penalty-shot save to deny Fabian Hochegger.

Just as GB looked set to secure all three points, Austria scored twice in 55 seconds inside the final five minutes of the third period with Luis Lindner (55:14) and Tim Harnisch (56:09) turning the game around.

But GB weren’t done and with Kerlin lifted in favour of the extra skater, Alderson scored from close range (58:36) to take the game to overtime.

Austria took the extra point by scoring on the powerplay in the extra period with the game-winning goal coming from Hochegger at 62:01.

Head coach, Martin Grubb, said: “I thought we worked really hard today against a very good team and earned a valuable point.

“We knew they would come hard and we would need to be good away from the puck and we were solid.

“Our penalty kill was good and we had some big performances all over the ice and again we showed our character to get a late equaliser.

“We now know what we have to do in our final game and we will rest and regroup to be ready for tomorrow.”

GB play their final game tomorrow when they face Italy Under-18s at 11:30am UK time.
