GB WOMEN U16S TO PARTICIPATE IN GLOBAL GIRLS’ GAME

Great Britain Women’s junior players will participate in this year’s IIHF Global Girls’ Game.

This year’s game in the UK will take place at Ice Sheffield on Saturday 10th March with a 6pm face-off. Entrance is free.

Youngsters from the GB Under-16 Women’s squad will participate in the game and a squad will be announced this week.

The Global Girls’ Game is a worldwide ice hockey event where women’s games take place across the world on one weekend.

With the various time zones across the world, it means a game is taking place nearly every hour.

Each country’s game sees two teams go head to head, usually named Team Blue and Team White, and a tally is kept across the world to give a running scoreline.

Last year’s event started in New Zealand and ended in Canada with Team Blue beating Team White 135-128 across all the games played in 38 different countries.

The Great Britain event in 2017 saw Team White beat Team Blue 5-0 with Charlotte Harris scoring all five goals.

GB Women’s head coach, Cheryl Smith, said: “The Global Girls’ Game is something we always want to participate in.

“It is a great showcase for women’s ice hockey across the world and it is nice to be part of something special.

“It also gives the girls a chance to take part in a game which is very useful for the coaching staff to work on systems and tactics.”
