GB WOMEN 8-2 SLOVENIA WOMEN

Great Britain Women beat Slovenia Women 8-2 to record their first victory in the World Championship Division 2 Group A in Gangneung.

Katie Henry and Katie Marsden both tallied 2+1 for three points, while Angela Taylor contributed four assists.

Netminder Michelle Franklin made her international debut when she replaced Nicole Jackson midway through the third period.

Leanne Ganney scored in the slot for her fourth goal of the tournament (9:47) and Marsden’s deflected shot (9:47) saw GB 2-0 up on the powerplay.

Saffron Allen drove in her first goal of the tournament at 14:09 before Taylor fed Marsden, who slotted in her fifth international goal (16:57).

Henry scored from the right circle at 20:16, while Casey Traill skated out from behind the net to score her first international goal (27:13) and GB’s sixth of the game.

Taylor and Henry clinically worked a two-on-0 break as the latter slotted home her second goal of the game (30:01).

The goal brought about a change in the Slovenia net as Ines Confidenti replaced Pia Dukaric.

That change steadied the flow of goals but GB netted their eighth when Georgina Farman cut in from behind the net at 43:09.

Jackson’s shutout was broken when Sara┬áConfidenti netted on the doorstep and shortly after Franklin took over between the pipes for the final 10 minutes.

Franklin made two big saves on a five-on-three penalty kill, but was beaten at 58:49 when Pia Pren converted a breakaway.

Head coach, Cheryl Smith, said: “This was a great performance and I am really pleased for the girls.

“We changed the lines around and the girls responded well to that.

“There were so many excellent performances all over the ice and they have much to be proud of.

“Of course, there are things we can do better but the girls deserve this victory.”

GB Women’s final game is on Saturday against Australia when depending on results in the rest of the competition, they could be playing for a bronze medal.
