GB U18 WOMEN 2-1 CHINA U18 WOMEN

Douglas scores dramatic overtime winner for GB

Shannon Douglas scored an overtime winner as Great Britain Under-18 Women beat China U18 Women 2-1 in the IIHF World Championship (Division 1B) in Katowice.

Netminder Maisie Gilbert turned away 15 of the 16 shots she faced, while Katie Marsden was named as GB’s player of the game.

China went ahead at 7:08 when Chunyang Fu netted from the slot, but GB hit back only 20 seconds later when Casey Traill grabbed her second goal of the tournament, assisted by Marsden and Douglas (7:28).

Traill and Marsden then went close on the same shift, while Gilbert saved well from Lixue Xing at the other end. Late in the period, Marsden hit the right-hand post and Traill was denied from close range as GB dominated.

China started on the front foot in period two and Gilbert made two great saves from a goalmouth scramble, while Marsden saw her shot from the left circle saved by Jiaxin Li.

Gilbert made a fantastic save from Jiayu Jiang inside the final minute of the third session and Traill saw her shot saved by Li moments later.

Douglas tipped in Abbie Sylvester’s shot in the extra period (62:18) as GB secured their first win of the tournament.

Coach, Michelle Smith, said: “The coaching staff are so proud of the girls.

“The way they bounced back from last night’s disappointment was amazing.

“They could’ve let their heads drop but they didn’t and they showed strength in character.

“There were fantastic performances all over the ice and we need to take this into our final game on Saturday.”
