Team GB Under 20 Game Three in the IIHF World Championships in Debrecen Hungary 16th December 2009

GB v Spain

First Period

Starting net minder for Team GB in their third game of the Tournament Ben Bowns finds himself between the pipes. Barely a minute gone in the game and Spain find themselves in the box with a 2 minute penalty for Hooking on  NAVARRO, Francisco Javier, Team GB's Stephen Lee doesn't take long to find the net on the PP at 2:40 assisted Matty Davies to give them a 1-0 lead.

Spain receive a further penalty at 11:24 VAZQUEZ  Oscar for Holding and Team GB are not able to find the net on the Power play. Within five seconds of Spain getting back to full strength Matty Davies extends the lead for Team GB with their second goal, assists coming from Ben Davies and Iain Bowie.
At 15:53 Team GB get their first penalty of the game with Ciaran Long getting a 2 minute penalty for Slashing. Spain take full advantage of the Powerplay and pull a goal back at 16:04 through  VAZQUEZ  Oscar. 16:38 Team GB in the penalty box again, this time Robert Farmer getting 2 minutes for Tripping and give Spain that extra man again on the PP. Again Spain use the PP to full advantage and tie the game at 18:09 through MUNOZ Juan. At 19:01 Iain Bowie is put in the Penalty box getting 2 minutes for Hooking to give Spain another Powerplay. GB end the period shorthanded and will start the second still having 59 seconds to kill of the Spanish PP.
Team GB not able to find the net in the first period to capitalise on their 2 goals and  had at least a further 5 goal scoring opportunities after outshooting Spain 23 to 10. Spain are a strong team  and are not going to give anything away here for free, GB are going to have to dig deep for their 3 points in this game and keep focussed. First period ends 2-2.

Second Period

GB start the second period a man down as Bowie has another 59 seconds to sit in the box serving the remainder of his minor penalty. GB kill off the penalty and get back to full strength.
Three and a half  minutes into the second period and Team GB regain the lead with an even handed goal from Tom Duggan assisted by Joe Graham and Ciaran Long at 23:35. GB have another Power play as Spain's HERNANDEZ Alejandro gets a 2 minute penalty for Hooking at 28:29, GB unable to find the net on the PP. 30:07 Ciaran Long pays another visit to the penalty box for Charging and at 31:13 Jamie Hayes joins Long in the box for 2 minutes for Tripping. Spain now have a 5 on 3 advantage and at 31:25 tie the game 3-3 with their 3rd Powerplay goal through MUNOZ, Juan.
36:26 Robert Farmer find himself heading to the penalty box for a 2 minute minor for Hooking and it only takes Spain 17 seconds of their Power Play to take the lead for the first time in the game through VAZQUEZ Oscar.
HERNANDEZ, Alejandro takes a 2 minute penalty for Tripping and Team GB get another PP but fail to find the back of the net.
Team GB finish the second period losing 1-2 after again outshooting Team Spain 15 to 9. GB had a goal disallowed by the linesman in the period when Shorthanded due to a player offside.
GB find themselves trailing 3-4 at the end of the second period and really have it all to do in the third period to get back in this game.

Third Period

Team GB start the third period in earnest and at 41.34 tie the game 4-4 with a strike from Iain Bowie assisted by Tom Duggan and Robert Farmer even handed. 6 minutes into the final period and Team GB restore their lead at 46:01 with Tom Norton putting GB in front with a even handed goal assisted by Iain Bowie. Spain come back and score their 5th goal of the game and tie the game at 48:35.
GB find themselves short-handed again when Iain Bowie gets a 2 minute minor for Holding and GB kill off the penalty. Spain's GARCIA-ARIAS Javier gets a 2 minute for High Sticks at 54:45 along with  GB's Craig Mitchell who receives a 2 minute minor penalty for Cross Checking. Spain find themselves shorthanded again at 58:51 with HERNANDEZ, Alejandro  getting 2 minutes for Holding the Stick, GB have another PP but are unable to win the game in regulation time.

Overtime

The first game of the tournament goes into overtime and Team GB get the man advantage at 61:28 when HERNANDEZ  Alejandro receives a 2 minute penalty for Interference. Team GB on the PP at 62:08 gets the game winning goal scored by Tom Duggan, assisted by Matt Davies and Stephen Lee.
Team GB secure 2 points in a big game which now guarantees them a Medal, it just depends what colour. GB have a rest day tomorrow (Thursday) and then have Mexico Friday and their final game Saturday v Hungary.
